ACA Introduction to Canoeing Level I: Bangor Area

The Level 1 Introduction to Canoeing course is designed as a short program emphasizing safety, enjoyment, and skill acquisition for entry-level individuals in public, private, and commercial settings. Students learn to paddle on flat water with basic paddle strokes and maneuvers that create the foundation for tandem canoeing.

  • Preparing and departing for a day or extended expedition

  • Knowing your equipment and supplies

  • Paddle Strokes and Maneuvering

  • Technical Knowledge

  • Safety and Rescue

This is a very involved course; you will be in and out of the water as we will be working on rescues and other techniques to prepare you for any situation.

Students should prepare for a full day. A packing list and complete schedule will be emailed to you after registering.

Wood Thrush Wilderness supplies all the canoes, paddles, PFDS, and all safety equipment for the course.


Prerequisites

  • Be 18 years or older.

  • Be able to independently participate in all skills, activities and rescues listed in the appropriate ACA Skills Course Outline

  • Be able to effectively communicate with the instructor and other course participants.

  • Be able to manage all personal care and mobility independently.
