The first part of our day, learn how to make your own birch bark basket. We will take the time in class to learn about the traditional crafting techniques and create our own piece of art.

We will go over how to identify and collect birch bark, the materials that will be used natural and commonly used materials. We will go over tools to use for collection and for creating a basket.

There are many designs and ways you can create a birch bark basket.  We will go over a few different types and allow the students to be creative in making their own basket.

All basket material must be prepared, and we will go through that process. We will also go over how to stitch and lash the bark together using sinew and discuss using spruce roots as well.

This is a great opportunity to create something beautiful with natural resources. 

Second part of the day, we will learn how to make Gourd Baskets with Pine Rims.
Make a gourd basket. Perfect for a gift or to keep for yourself.

Gourds will be pre-cut. Students will need to clean gourds, sand, and drill holes. Then we will sew white pine needles to the rim. We will be able to pick from a number of stains to finish the gourds. Gourds are around 4-5” in diameter.

During this class, we will also go over the basics of making pine needle baskets.

This is another great class to learn a skill for life. 

The course fee will cover all material, use of tools, and instruction.
