Maine Potato Basket - Augusta, Maine

  • Viles Arboretum 153 Hospital Street Augusta, ME, 04330 United States (map)

Discover the heritage and craft of traditional basket weaving in this hands-on Maine Potato Basket Workshop. Known for their strength and utility, potato baskets were once essential tools on Maine farms—now they're prized for their beauty and function.

In this full-day workshop, participants will learn to create their own potato basket using natural materials of various size reed and wood. You'll explore traditional techniques including shaping the base, setting the spokes, and weaving the sides.

This basket measures approx. 16.5”W x 14”H (w/handle). Students can use color reed to personalize their basket.

No experience necessary—perfect for beginners and experienced crafters alike.

** Since this is a basket to carry food, we recommend that students treat the basket at home with tung oil. Tung oil is a natural oil extracted from nuts. It is all-natural, environmentally friendly, food safe, and great for a water-resistant finish. **
