Join our hands-on workshop to learn how to transform bottle gourds into beautiful, functional bowls and cups and whittle wooden spoons. We will gather together to savor a delicious group meal, where we will enjoy hearty soups and crusty bread. Try out your newly whittled spoon.
A great way to learn a skill for life.

Creating our gourd bowl and cup will go over the following:

  • What type of gourds are for bowls and cups

  • How to grow gourds in New England

  • Cleaning and drying techniques

  • Selecting and preparing gourds including cutting and cleaning

  • Explore food-safe finishes and decorative options like, staining, or natural oils

Whittling is a wonderful skill that can turn a block of wood into a functional tool i.e.. a spoon. This spoon will be a great addition to your gourd bowl and cup. Here is what we will go over:

  • Gathering the proper tools and materials

  • Caring and sharpening your tools

  • Using your knives and various techniques

  • Refining your cut

  • Selecting the wood and how to prepare it

  • Creating a rough shape

  • How to make the “bowl”

  • Shaping the handle and creating designs

  • Sanding and treating the spoon

  • Remember to take your time, work carefully, and practice!

Course fee covers material, instruction, and a meal.
New tools, carving kits, and gourds will be for sale at a discount for students.
